Jil is an active member of the Cadillac Mailing List. She has sent me some pictures of the cars she owns. Included with these pictures was a very nicely detailed letter describing her passion for midly customizing Cadillacs. Here are some excerpts:
"The red 1947 Cadillac is a Series 61, model 6107 fastback (also known as a sedanette or torpedoback). I have owned it for 14 years. It was an original car when I got it, with a 346 flathead V-8 engine. I drove it like that until 1994 when I put it in the back of the garage - it was getting to be a real headache, since the original front end wasn't in the greatest shape and it had no power steering (and I'm not very big and strong!).
Last Christmas my husband and his friend put in a new front end out of a 1978 Nova, a 350 Chevrolet engine and best of all, power steering. Purists shudder at it, but we did our best to make sure it looks all original - you can only tell if you open the hood."
"There is no doubt that the green 1957 is not a stock vehicle! This
belongs to my husband Fred Bottcher. It's a 1958 Series 62 two-door hardtop.
He's owned it for twelve years and when he got it, it was all original
and painted pink from the factory. He restored it to original condition
and drove it that way until 1992. (...) The drivetrain is now a 350 Chevrolet
engine with a 1973 Fleetwood front end. The cas has been lowered drastically
and has been "shaved", that is, the door handles, hood ornament, trunk
ornament and almost all of the chrome is gone. Access is gained by use
of the Cadillac crest in the front of the door."
