I have always been fascinated with the excessive fins found on the late fifties - early sixties Cadillacs. The 59 Cadillac is the epitome of this styling excercise. Take a random documentary on Cadillacs and chances are a 59 is the star of the show. On each and every classic American car show, the 59s attract a lot of attention. Maybe the 59 is not the most beautiful postwar Cadillac, but it definitely is the most flamboyant one. That is why I have always wanted to own one. In the summer of 1997 I started my quest for a good 59. Initially I had wanted to buy a Series 62 Convertible, but soon I found out prices where prohibitively high. Since I had already two convertibles in my collection, I thought a Coupe would not be such a bad choice after all. After some browsing through magazines and surfing on the internet, I found a very nice car at the Saint Louis Car Museum. The color was very attractive, it had the accessories I wanted and furthermore it was a Coupe de Ville (and not a regular Series 62). After some negotiating I bought the car and it has been in Belgium since early September 1997. The car is an immense joy to drive. The engine is powerful and quiet, the transmission (my first Hydra-Matic) shifts almost unnoticeably and you feel like a million dollars driving in it. Of course, it is a real head turner, attracting attention and cheers wherever it shows it magnificent fins. However, it does give the practice Chrome Polishing a whole different meaning. Enjoy the pictures!
