Introduction
Have you ever struggled with a seemingly unsolvable problem on your Cadillac? Would you like to know more about the history of a certain model? Have you ever asked yourself what those codes stand for on your Cadillac’s body plate? The Cadillac Mailing List (CML) is a worldwide online community consisting of over 500 members. It is an automatically maintained list dedicated to the distribution of general information, questions, inquiries about Cadillacs and related topics. It is an online system using Yahoo Groups.

CML Online Archive
If you want a taste of what you can expect, or if you simply want to look up an old CML message, you can consult the CML Archive. Bela Gazdy has put online an archive of all CML messages at the World Wide Web. Just go to http://bluedog.cc.emory.edu/archives/cml/ to find several years worth of CML reading enjoyment. Thanks, Bela! The CML Archive is publicly accessible to anyone with a with an Internet connection.

There is also an online archive at Yahoo Groups, which allows subscribers to the CML to reply to messages. This archive is particularly useful for web-only subscribers (see below).

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to own a Cadillac in order to become a member?
No, you do not have to own a Cadillac in order to become a CML member. Anyone with an interest in Cadillacs, anyone wishing to participate in discussions pertaining to Cadillacs, or anyone who has a question relating to Cadillacs can become a member.

2. What can I expect to receive?
This depends to the kind of service that you subscribe to. The CML offers three kinds of mailings: non-digest, digest and web-only.

·        The non-digest service is the one that is chosen by most members. When you subscribe to this service, you will receive each individual mail posted to the CML. Generally, the traffic averages around 20-30 emails per day.

·        For subscribers with little time, small mailboxes or reduced interest in the CML, a digest service is available. The CML will make a global mail a couple of times a day, grouping the message. This global message is then dispatched to the digest members.

·        Finally there is the web-only option. Subscribers to this option will not receive any mails at all. They can consult the archives and reply to messages.

3. How do I subscribe to the regular service?
It is pretty simple. Enter your email address in the box below and click on the "Yahoo! Groups Join Now" button. Your subscription will be activated within 24 hours.

Alternatively, you can send a blank message to thecml-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

4. How do I subscribe to the digest service or the web-only service?
You will be prompted for the kind of subscription you want when after you have clicked the subscribe-button. You can change your subscription mode by accessing your user information on Yahoo Groups.

5. Can I switch from digest to non-digest and vice versa?
Yes, this is pretty simple. Just use the procedure described in the previous paragraph. You can change modes as often as you like.

6. How do I know my subscription request has been accepted?
All subscriptions requests have to be acknowledged by the administrator. The maximum delay for a notification message is 24 hours. If you have not received a notification 24 hours after you sent your request, something is wrong. Retry your attempt, or ask me (gruwez@LibertySoftware.be) for advice.

7. What can I use the list for ?
You can use the list for all questions, opinions, inquiries or other matter regarding Cadillacs. There is no restriction on what can be submitted, as long as it is related to Cadillacs.

8. What can I not use the list for ?
The following topics will not be allowed on the CML: advertising or other commercial material, flaming, uncivilized behavior, insulting, non Cadillac related matter. A subscriber who violates this rules will be permanently dropped from the list. Please do not post binaries or attachments to the list. Attachments will be automatically removed by the CML server, resulting in empty messages.

 9. A few simple guidelines
Always use an appropriate subject. Messages without subjects, or messages with totally incorrect subjects are confusing and do not contribute to a healthy mailing list environment.
Be polite and respect others. Having healthy discussions is OK and nobody expects you to share anyone else's opinion. As long as the discussions remain polite, there is no problem.
"Snip" your replies. If you reply to mail, only quote that part that is relevant to your reply. Please do not repeat the entire message and please remove the subscribe/unsubscribe footer.
Always use your first and last name to sign your messages. Handles, initials, etc… are not allowed. Being able to put a name to a message greatly improves the community sense on the CML.

Subscribers who violate against the guidelines will receive a warning message. A new infraction after two warnings will result in the cancellation of your subscription.

CML Activities
Although the CML groups people from all over the globe, this has not prevented some members from holding small "CML Meetings". There have been such meetings at the East Coast (on the occasion of the Hershey and Carlisle swap meets), on the West Coast (near the San Francisco Bay Area) and even on at my home in Belgium (very small meeting though). A very entertaining account on the Nov. 1st & 2nd West Coast CML Meeting can be found at Christina Reynen's web site.

I had to pleasure to be visited by a number of long time CML members. The first CML-er to visit me was Dan Johnson, the second party consisted of Yann & Gita Saunders and Ruben Baeten. In May 1998, as Belgian-Dutch-American CML meeting was held at my place. Guests were Frank and Christina Reynen and their family, joined later by Ruben Baeten and Davy Borghys. In 1999 Frank Perch and his daughter Katie visitied our home. Frank is from Philadelphia and he is the webmaster of Frank's Land Yacht Marina. Tony Mitchelhill of the UK stopped by on a wet and cold December Saturday afternoon in 1999. Click on the thumbnails to see a full size picture.

Likewise my wife and I have had terrific receptions by CML members in the USA. We have visited CML friends in South Carolina, Florida, California and Arizona. All of them were extremely hospitable. Were it not for the CML, I would never have met those people.

Members' profiles
Yann Saunders did a magnificent job by gathering the CML members' profiles. These profiles were sent in by the members themselves and gathered by Yann in one practical word document. This 45KB document can be downloaded from this location.
